From April 18th to 22nd Dubai Men’s College (DMC), one of the Higher Colleges of Technology in Dubai went green when it celebrated Earth Week for the second year in a row with a wide range of environmentally-friendly events, culminating in a tree-planting ceremony sponsored by the students and staff members of the DMC community. DMC’s Earth Week campaign, which was organized by the DMC Environmental Club was aimed at promoting awareness of global environmental issues and demonstrating ways in which each one of us can help to save our planet. Each day of the week featured a theme, with a range of activities and competitions.

Themes included Awareness Day to target student awareness, followed by Eco-friendly day, Clean-up Day, Recycling Day and culminated with Earth Day.

On Awareness Day, students and staff were treated, in collaboration with British Council, to the newly released film “The Age of Stupid”. In addition, guest lecturer Dr Radhia Al Hashimi, Director of Global Consulting Associate, Dubai, spoke to students about air pollution in Dubai in her talk “Breathe Smart with Clean Indoor Air”. Student members of the Environmental Club played an active part in organizing the week’s events and promoting all the activities throughout the class rooms.

Eco-friendly Day got off to an energy saving start with Energy Hour at 9am by switching off lights, laptops and mobile phones for an hour. Posters from a range of competitions related to environmental themes held during the previous week were on display and participants were asked to vote for the best overall poster. Throughout the week the DMC Pledge Tree displaying the green pledges from last year’s event to make DMC greener day by day, was featured prominently. This not only reminded students about their own commitment from last year but the need for their ongoing involvement in caring for the environment. To make this process easier, the DEWA booth provided tips and tricks for saving energy and water, and this was articulated more fully by Abdalla Al Qassab from DEWA.

Ekotribe showcased an array of eco-friendly items such as Solar Chargers, Solar Backpacks, and Solar Laptop charger bags, Recycled Stationery, Rechargeable USB Battery Cell and other unique eco- items that help us live sustainably. The Clean-up Day that followed included a clean classroom competition that gave students an opportunity to clean their classrooms and beautify them in a cost effective way.

Recycling Day was a big event with competitions for collecting used battery, toners and old mobile phones. Collection points were established throughout the campus and then items distributed to the appropriate agencies for recycling. Batteries were a very popular item to recycle and the college collected more than 500 pieces on that day. Through gathering recyclable paper throughout the week, DMC participated in the “My Tree in Dubai” campaign organized by the Emirates Environment Group, and recycled paper to own an HCT-DMC tree. This tree was planted at Mushrif park on Saturday 24 April.

Building again on last year’s ‘Sponsor a DMC Tree’ initiative, the tree planting on the Earth Day was again a focal point. This final day culminated with sixteen staff and students planting the trees they sponsored on the now expanded DMC Green Space, allocated for planting trees sponsored by the corporate sector and DMC community. The weeklong activities provided an opportunity for students, staff and community to heighten awareness and actively contribute to the environment. These events also initiated new ongoing recycling activities at the college particularly with the enthusiastic response to the battery and toner recycling.

“Earth Week at DMC this year has been a great success. Students and staff have participated enthusiastically in many and varied activities focused entirely on the environment. I know that through these activities our students will become more aware of the importance of preserving the natural resources around them. I’m sure our Earth Week leaders, Mercy and Wahida, will inspire us to even greater things next year, and I congratulate them for making this an excellent event." said Mr Phil Corcos, acting director of Dubai Men’s College.
